How to sell on TikTok LIVE: the shop owner's guide (2026)
The short version of how to sell on TikTok LIVE: unlock the LIVE button first (an account aged 18 or over with 1,000 followers, or a shop on TikTok Shop), then go live at the same time every day for at least an hour, repeat your hero products every 10–15 minutes, answer comments the moment you see them, and close with an offer that ends when the live ends. Shops that do all five for a month usually start seeing orders from live. Shops that go live whenever they remember usually do not. This is the shop owner's version, not the influencer's.
Before you tap LIVE: who TikTok lets go live
TikTok shows the LIVE button to accounts that pass two checks: the owner is 18 or over, and the account has at least 1,000 followers. Below that, the button simply is not there. TikTok changes these rules from time to time, so check the current app before you plan.
Under 1,000 followers? Three real options
- Open a shop on TikTok Shop — a verified seller account usually gets live selling through the shop without waiting for followers, because TikTok wants shops selling on the platform. The exact terms depend on your account type; check your Seller Center.
- Build followers with short clips first — one to three 15–30 second product clips a day, ideally answering customer questions. Consistent shops often reach 1,000 within one to two months, and those followers are the people who will watch your first live.
- Let an account that already qualifies go live for you — a hired host with a ready account, or a service that streams into your channel, while your own account grows. Fastest to start selling; make sure orders land in your shop, not the host's.
Prepare the day before
Pick 5–8 products, not the whole shop
Three roles: a traffic product (cheap, quick decision, opens the live), profit products (what you really want to sell) and a closer (a bundle or a gift above a threshold).
Put every product in the TikTok Shop basket
Correct photo, price and stock. TikTok viewers buy from the basket and pin, they rarely message you. A product that is not in the basket is a product you are not selling.
Write three lines per product
What it is, who it is for, and what is special today. A host with a script keeps talking when the chat is quiet, which is exactly when beginners go silent and viewers leave.
Prepare answers to the repeat questions
Shipping time, free shipping, sizes, authenticity, returns. Write them down so you answer instantly.
Only four pieces of gear
A phone with a sharp front camera, a steady tripod, one light from the front, and a stable connection. Sound matters more than picture: a clip-on microphone before a second light.
Laying out a TikTok LIVE screen: where products and price signs stay visible
A TikTok LIVE screen layers the account name, comments, buttons and the shopping bag over your picture. A price sign or product under them is invisible to viewers. TikTok publishes no official size for these zones on the LIVE screen; the figures in use come from safe-zone guides for vertical video, whose interface is close to the LIVE screen, and two guides disagree a lot. Treat them as a range and check on a real phone before every live.
| Edge | House of Marketers (%) | Strike Social (%) | On a 1080×1920 frame (approx. px) | What sits there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom (% of height) | 20 | 45 | 384–864 | Account name, caption, comments, shopping bag |
| Top (% of height) | 10 | 14 | 192–269 | LIVE title, viewer count, close button |
| Right (% of width) | No figure; avoid the right edge | 22 | ≈238 | Like, comment and share buttons |
| Left (% of width) | No figure; avoid the bottom-left corner | 11 | ≈119 | Profile picture and comment text |
In practice: keep your face and the product in the middle of the frame, keep any price or promo sign above the bottom 20% at the very least, raise it towards the middle when a busy chat makes the comment stack taller, stay clear of the right edge with its buttons, and keep text off the top edge.
During the live: seven habits of shops that sell
- First 30 seconds: say what you sell today and the deal — no long greeting, no waiting for viewers.
- Repeat the script every 10–15 minutes — new viewers arrive constantly; the ones who were there from the start have mostly left.
- Pin the product you are talking about — viewers buy from the pin.
- Call commenters by name — the person stays, and everyone else sees the room is answered.
- Give a reason to buy now — a live-only price, a gift for the first orders, a code that dies at the end. It must be real; TikTok detects exaggerated claims and cuts reach.
- Never go silent — ten quiet seconds and viewers scroll on. Demonstrate, read a review, tell what a buyer said.
- Long enough, same time — under an hour barely gives the system time to push viewers in. Shops that see results stream one to two hours at the same time every day.
Does TikTok LIVE actually make money?
Yes, and for a shop it comes from one place: product sales through the TikTok Shop basket. LIVE Gifts (converted to Diamonds and cashed out) are creator income under TikTok's programme rules; for a shop they are a bonus, not a plan. Your income is sales minus the platform fee, your share of shipping, and the cost of goods. Fees change by period and category; check Seller Center. Expect single-digit to double-digit concurrent viewers and possibly zero orders in the first lives. That is normal. What turns a live into money is accumulated hours and a fixed schedule, not a trick. Each income source and the income formula are covered in does TikTok LIVE selling make money.
The mistakes beginners make most
- Going live when you remember — the system cannot learn when to push viewers, and returning viewers cannot find you.
- Talking to the people who were there from the start — "I already covered this one" means nothing to someone who just arrived.
- Basket does not match what you say — one wrong price and the room stops trusting the whole live.
- Slow replies — TikTok viewers wait half a minute at most. If one person cannot keep up, add a second person to read and type.
- Light from behind or above — one light from the front fixes it.
- Overclaiming — in beauty and supplements especially, words like "cures" or "guaranteed" get a live restricted or ended. Say only what you can prove.
A one-week schedule for a one-person shop
| Day | Time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Evening, 1 hour | Open the week: two traffic products, two profit products |
| Tuesday | No live | Cut two clips from yesterday's live, answer chats, pack orders |
| Wednesday | Evening, 1 hour | Same set, add a gift for repeat buyers |
| Thursday | No live | Post clips, read the stats: when do viewers arrive, which product gets tapped |
| Friday | Evening, 1–2 hours | The big live: offer ends in the live, pin the best sellers from Monday and Wednesday |
| Saturday | Daytime, 1 hour | Test daytime against evening |
| Sunday | Rest | Sum up, pick next week's set |
After four weeks, watch two numbers: average viewers per live and orders per live hour. When orders per hour settle, live hours become the lever that moves sales directly, and the question changes from "how do I go live" to "how do I go live longer without burning out".
If going live every day yourself is not possible
Most shops stall here, not on technique. The owner goes live for two weeks and loses their voice, or the shop floor leaves no time. Two ways out.
Hire a host when products need hands-on demonstration, improvisation and jokes, and you only need a few hours a day. The limits: good hosts are hard to find, a person lasts 2–4 hours before the voice goes, and when they are sick or quit, the live stops. We compare this in detail in hiring a live host vs an AI host.
Let an AI host do the live: an AI made from the face and voice of a consenting real person speaks the sales script, repeats the hero products every 10–15 minutes without tiring, streams eight hours as well as the first, and answers comments from a set of approved answers, with a human team controlling the script and comments backstage throughout. Done right it is labelled as AI on every live under TikTok's rules on AI-generated content, says only what the shop has confirmed, and always has consent from the person it is made from. Read how it works and whether it is allowed in what AI live commerce is, or see UpperLive's AI live host service for TikTok, Shopee, Lazada, Facebook and YouTube.
Whichever you choose, the rules in this article are the same. Unlock LIVE, fill the basket, speak for the viewer who just arrived, answer at once, and stream long enough at the same time. The only difference is who does the talking.
Questions this article raises
Can I go live on TikTok with under 1,000 followers?
The LIVE button normally opens for accounts aged 18 or over with 1,000 followers. Below that, register as a seller on TikTok Shop, where verified shop accounts usually get live selling without waiting for followers, post one to three short clips a day to build viewers, or let an account that already qualifies stream into your channel in the meantime. Rules change; check the current app.
How many hours do I need to go live before it sells?
At least one hour per live, at the same time every time, for about a month before judging. Under an hour barely gives the system time to push viewers in. Shops that see results stream one to two hours a day and watch two numbers: average viewers per live and orders per live hour.
Do I need TikTok Shop, or can viewers just message me?
You can, but you will sell very little. TikTok live viewers buy from the basket and the pinned product; they rarely message. If you want orders from live, open a shop on TikTok Shop and put every product you will mention in the basket before you start.
Does TikTok LIVE make money, and from where?
Yes. For a shop it comes from product sales through the TikTok Shop basket, minus the platform fee, your share of shipping and the cost of goods. LIVE Gifts are creator income under TikTok's programme rules and a bonus for a shop, not a plan. The first lives may bring no orders; accumulated hours and a fixed schedule are what turn live into money.
Can an AI host sell on TikTok LIVE for me?
Yes, under TikTok's terms in Thailand: the host must be labelled as AI on every live under the rules on AI-generated content, the face and voice must come from a consenting real person, and a human team should control the script and comments backstage. It fits shops that need long daily lives with prices right every time; shops whose products need hands-on demonstration should still use a person.
