What live commerce is,
and why Thai shops go live

Live commerce is selling through a live video stream where viewers watch, ask and buy on the spot, as on Shopee Live, TikTok Shop and Facebook Live. It differs from ordinary online selling in that the seller talks and answers comments in real time, which closes sales faster and builds more trust than a static product page. In Thailand live commerce became a main channel for online shops during COVID and keeps growing on Shopee, TikTok, Facebook, Lazada and YouTube.

TERMS

Live commerce · video commerce · social commerce
and how they differ

01

Live commerce

Selling through a live video where viewers interact and order at once. Its strengths are urgency (deals that exist only in the live) and answering questions face to face. The host can be a real person or an AI.

02

Video commerce

The broader term: selling through video of any kind, from short clips with a product basket to reviews and lives. Live commerce is one part of video commerce. The e-Conomy SEA 2024 report names video commerce as a main driver of Thai e-commerce that year.

03

Social commerce

Buying and selling that happens on social media: chat orders, sales posts, "CF" comments. No video is required. A live on Facebook or TikTok is where social commerce and live commerce overlap.

THE THAI MARKET IN NUMBERS

Figures you can check,
not round numbers

  • Thai e-commerce reached about US$26 billion in gross merchandise value in 2024, up 19%, and the report credits the rising popularity of video commerce (e-Conomy SEA 2024 by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company, Nov 2024)
  • 81% of Thais who watch lives and shop online have watched a live to shop, and 70% of them have bought from one; 79% watch at least weekly, 42% trust a new brand more after its live, and Facebook is the platform Thais use most to watch shopping lives (Decision Lab, Live Commerce Landscape in Thailand, Sep 2024; 702 respondents surveyed in Dec 2023)
  • Shopee Live in Thailand ran over 9 times more live sessions and took over 40 times more orders in the first half of 2024 than a year earlier, as reported by Shopee Thailand itself (Brand Inside, Jun 2024)
  • In China, live commerce was worth about US$171 billion in 2020 and companies report conversion rates near 30%, up to ten times conventional e-commerce. China is not Thailand, but it is the direction the Thai market is following (McKinsey, Jul 2021)

Platform figures are self-reported and measured from different bases, so they cannot be compared across platforms. The Decision Lab survey covers people who already watch lives and shop online, not all Thai consumers.

PLATFORMS

Where Thai shops go live

PlatformBest forStrengthsGood to know
Shopee LiveShops already selling on ShopeeIn-live basket, live-only discount codes, viewers who came to buyNeeds a shop and listed products first; sales ride on platform promotions
TikTok Shop / TikTok LiveProducts people want on sight, at easy-decision pricesReaches new people from the For You feed; the yellow basket buys inside clips and livesNeeds TikTok Shop first; viewers come and go fast, so the pitch repeats often
Facebook LiveShops with a page and an existing customer baseThe platform Thais use most to watch shopping lives; sales close in comments and MessengerNo built-in basket, so someone or some system must turn comments into orders
Lazada LiveShops selling mainly on LazadaCoupons and product showcase inside the live, tied to the platform's big campaignsSmaller live audience than Shopee and TikTok in Thailand
YouTube LiveProducts that need a long explanation and should stay searchableLong lives; the recording stays up and ranks in searchNo basket for most Thai shops, so orders go through links or chat

HOW TO START

Start selling live in five steps

01

Pick the platform where your customers are

Existing customers on a page: start with Facebook Live. A shop on Shopee or Lazada: go live there first. Looking for new customers: open TikTok Shop. Get one channel steady before adding more.

02

Prepare products and live-only deals

Choose 5–15 products with enough stock and set deals that exist only in the live (a free gift, free shipping, a time-boxed price). Urgency is the main reason people buy while watching.

03

Write the script and product order

A one-minute opener, then 3–5 minutes per product (problem → product → how to use → deal → how to order), repeated, because viewers arrive all the time. Prepare answers to the usual questions: delivery time, cash on delivery.

04

Camera, light, mic, and someone on comments

A current phone, one front light and a clip-on mic are enough for a first live. What you cannot skip is a second person answering comments and taking orders, because an unanswered comment is a lost sale.

05

Go live consistently, then measure

Same time every day or every week so viewers remember. Watch peak viewers, average watch time and orders per hour, then adjust the order of products and the script. This is the step most shops cannot sustain: hosts tire, fall ill, and can only live a few hours a day.

THE AI SHORTCUT

If step 5 is the problem,
let an AI host go live

AI live commerce is live commerce with an AI host, made from the face and voice of a consenting real person, speaking a script your shop approved. It goes live every day for as long as you need, while a human team runs the system and answers comments backstage, which makes going live easy to keep up. You do steps 1–3 once; the system and the team do steps 4–5 every day.

FAQ

Common questions about live commerce

Is live commerce the same as live selling or live shopping?

Yes. Live selling, live shopping and livestream commerce all mean selling through a live video stream where viewers order on the spot. In Thai it is simply "ไลฟ์ขายของ".

Can a small shop with no followers start live selling?

Yes, but pick a platform that brings new viewers: TikTok Live, which seeds viewers from the For You feed, or Shopee Live, where people arrive intending to buy. Facebook Live works once you have a page audience, or with ads driving into the live.

How long and how often should a shop go live?

An hour is enough for a first live, but results come from consistency: the same slot every day or every week. Shops that can live every day for several hours gain the most from the channel, which is why many now use an AI host instead of a person.

What equipment do I need?

A current phone, a stand, one front light, a clip-on mic and a stable connection are enough for a first live. Add cameras and lights once the live is a routine.

Can an AI host sell live, and do the platforms allow it?

Yes, provided the AI host is made from a consenting real person, every live is labelled as AI, and it only states facts the shop confirmed, with a human team in control backstage. Details are on What is AI live commerce.
